About the Role

A national nonprofit working to rebuild and sustain local news across the country is hiring an Audience Growth & Monetization Lead to join its specialized support team. The organization invests capital in nonprofit newsrooms and provides hands-on coaching and resources to help them grow into sustainable, community-serving institutions. It has raised over $240 million for the cause and works with a growing portfolio of local news organizations nationwide. This role sits within a dedicated lab focused on helping portfolio newsrooms drive toward product-market fit. The Audience Growth & Monetization Lead will own the strategy and delivery of expert support across audience development, reader revenue, earned revenue, SEO/AEO, newsletter growth, and sponsorship. The work is both strategic and operational: reviewing portfolio-wide analytics, translating trends into actionable guidance, managing a network of specialist contractors and coaches, and providing direct advisory support to newsroom and business leaders. A strong fit for someone with senior-level experience owning audience growth or revenue at a media organization, a track record of helping teams adopt new practices and tools, and the ability to coach leaders across a diverse portfolio of organizations at different stages of maturity. What the Role Covers

  • Assessing portfolio organizations' maturity in audience and revenue disciplines, identifying priority gaps, and developing targeted interventions for individual grantees or cohorts
  • Providing hands-on strategic coaching to priority newsrooms on top-of-funnel growth, newsletter strategy, reader revenue, earned revenue, SEO/AEO, and monetization
  • Managing and expanding a network of specialist contractors, coaches, and vendors, including defining scopes of work, success metrics, and quality standards for all expert engagements
  • Leading portfolio-wide briefings and learning sessions that showcase emerging practices in audience growth and monetization
  • Reviewing cross-portfolio analytics and translating performance data and industry trends into clear, actionable recommendations
  • Partnering with the portfolio learning team to design and run accelerators, workshops, playbooks, and trainings that build core competencies across grantees
  • Building a community of subject matter experts within the portfolio to share insights, pressure-test ideas, and experiment together
  • Cultivating external relationships across the local journalism ecosystem and adjacent industries to surface new resources, partnerships, and reduced-cost opportunities for portfolio organizations
  • Collaborating with the broader program team to ensure specialist support aligns with each organization's strategic goals and outcomes

Qualifications

  • Senior leadership experience with direct ownership of audience growth, revenue, or both within a newsroom or media organization
  • Deep understanding of audience development and monetization strategies, including reader revenue, sponsorships, newsletters, SEO/AEO, and top-of-funnel growth
  • Demonstrated ability to design and lead support strategies for media organizations rooted in real needs and long-term sustainability
  • Strong track record of helping organizations adopt new practices, tools, or technologies through external experts, with measurable impact
  • Experience scoping ambiguous problems, setting priorities and workplans, using data and feedback to assess progress, and iterating based on results
  • Experience leading and managing experts, coaches, and senior leaders, with the ability to influence across levels and disciplines
  • Experience building partnerships and negotiating clear, favorable terms
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear insights and actionable recommendations
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality documentation and analysis
  • Deep appreciation for the role of equity in newsroom development and a willingness to coach others on putting those values into practice
